UNIT VI REFLECTION

In this unit we learned some advantages and disadvantages of self assessment; we think that the decision of doing self assessment is not only of the teacher, because we have to know if our students are prepared to evaluate themselves honestly. We also review many techniques to carry out self assessment like surveys, questionnaires, and monitoring, rating scales, among others. We think that it could be useful to put in practice all the techniques in order to select the one that be better for the students based on their characteristics.

TECHNIQUES AND INSTRUMENTS OF SELF-ASSESSMENT

Class survey
It results very important and useful because we as future teachers need to look for the best way to help our students to learn, a classroom survey is a good way to get an idea about the background of the whole group and it is useful to integrate the activities according to their levels and capacities.
It is a good way to make the students help each other working in a cooperative way to overtake the same goal.
Descriptions
The descriptions results very useful to make the students reflect about what they have learned during the course, they also have the opportunity to express in a freely way if they had any problem.
Monitoring
We think is fairly important for the students to be encourage to look for their own mistakes because is a good way to make them understand what could be wrong, and they are learning by themselves and do not feel the teacher pressure , and it is going to help them to reflect more about their work and learn from their own mistakes.
Test
It is a good way to know our students’ progress and if they have any problem doing using the target language, and it also help them reflect about what they did during the course.

Final project
You are going to prepare a portfolio that you are going to hang in at the end of the course.
It has to contain:

  • Each topic covered during the course separated by units.
  • Every reading material used during the course.
  • A reflection for each activity made in class, try to express your ideas about the class and if there was something that you did not understand.
  • A comment about the course, write any suggestion to make a better class.

UNIT 5 REFLECTION

During this unit we developed a test with all the instruments that this required. In the test we wrote different activities to measure the knowledge acquired in the four skills. We put in practice what we have seen in previous units like to do a valid, reliable and practical test. We as teachers need to know our students and take into account that in order to create good tests for them.

The Test and the Narrative

THE TEST AND THE NARRATIVE

Achievement test for 1st level

INTRODUCTION:
In this task we have constructed an achievement test for students of first level. This test is focused in the four skills (writing, listening, speaking, and listening) and we designed it in a way that looks easy (taking into consideration that it’s first level) not like those tests that when students look them they get stressed.

OBJECTIVES AND ANALYSIS FOR PURPOSES:
The purpose of this exam is to test students’ knowledge in the simple present and present continuous, in some activities they will be asked to use adjectives. We are going to see the progress that students have made concerning to this topic (simple present vs. present continuous) using the 4 skills.

For reading, the activity that we designed is a short text that uses the simple present and the present continuous, once they have read the text they will have to answer six true/false questions, here they will develop comprehension and skimming; this is useful to find the main ideas of the text and for help the students to comprehend the information without reading word-by-word

For writing, we made an exercise which have many sentences that are describing some people doing certain verbs (present continuous); students have to complete those sentences by using the correct adjective they believe that goes by using simple present tense. Students have the opportunity to practice all that they have learnt and also to find the relation between verbs, adjectives and emotions.

For listening we are going to play a short conversation, of course this conversation includes the topics that we are testing, we are going to play it twice in case that they missed something, when they have to do this activity teacher will ask them to turn down their tests because if they read the questions that they will have to answer they will just focus in that specific questions instead of the whole conversation, our purpose is that they can develop comprehension and become familiar with the sounds and the pronunciation of the words.

The activity for speaking will be the last one, speaking will be evaluated with a conversation, the teacher will ask each student about his/her family, hobbies, future plans and daily things that he does, the student will have to speak for two minutes without interruptions and of course applying what he has learned. We established the time of 2 minutes since the group has many students.

The activities in this test are simple and easy to follow; the limit time of the test is 120 minutes to complete it, this test can be done in less time but we are taking into consideration the speaking activity that takes more time because every student has to do it.

COMMENTS BY MODERATORS

This test was made by Fabiola Esquivel, Josué Rocha and Leticia Valadez. We revised that the grammar didn’t have mistakes. This test is acceptable; the test is concentrated in testing students’ knowledge in the simple present and present continuous tense. It is acceptable according to the level of the students and the vocabulary is adequate. Also the exercises are acceptable and useful for each of the skills; they are simple for the students to solve which in the moment they will have to demonstrate their knowledge of this unit.

The instructions are clear and easy and to follow, even some exercises have examples to clear an exercise that they might have problems doing it. This test is acceptable and practical for the students and also for the teacher.

NARRATIVE OF THE PROCESS

The test is direct because we already know what we want to measure, it makes this test more specific, we are going to evaluate just simple present and present continuous trying to know the students’ progress and if they have performed the four skills according to their level. And this test is validity since measures knowledge of the domain content of which it was designed to measure knowledge.

Reliability of items scoring is really important because we need to have the same way to measure each student and to have a consistency of scores across different evaluators over different time period. It is used to substantiate elements of accuracy to the test administered on candidates and they really feel what they are able to do.

FEEDBACK

When we provide feedback in test we need to make the students notice what was wrong and we have to look for the best form to make them analyze the information that they already know. A good way to do it is after the test, the teacher and the students answer the test together in order to comprehend each item and to make them infer the answers or what they need to work on to overtake their learning objective of the course.

It is also important provide feed-back individually to rich the students’ knowledge.
